As more enthusiasts flock to the Algarve's stunning coastline, it becomes crucial to emphasize the importance of sustainable SUP practices. Here's how to paddle responsibly and protect the marine ecosystems you love.
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has gained immense popularity in the Algarve, a region celebrated for its breathtaking coastline and pristine waters. As more enthusiasts flock to this stunning locale to enjoy the thrill of paddling, it becomes crucial to emphasize the importance of sustainable SUP practices.
Engaging in SUP activities can have significant impacts on marine environments. The introduction of foreign materials, such as plastic waste, can disrupt the natural habitat and harm marine life. Additionally, the physical presence of paddleboarders can disturb local wildlife, including seabirds and aquatic species.
1. Use reusable water bottles
Say no to single-use plastic on the water. Bring a reusable bottle and keep it clipped to your board.
2. Choose eco-friendly sunscreen
Many conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that are toxic to coral and marine life. At BlueXperiences, we provide reef-safe sunscreen on all our tours.
3. Leave no trace
Whatever you bring onto the water, bring it back to shore. This includes snack wrappers, bottle caps, and any other rubbish.
4. Respect marine wildlife
Keep a respectful distance from sea birds, fish, and other marine animals. Do not paddle through nesting areas or feeding zones.
5. Choose sustainable equipment
Look for boards made from eco-friendly materials. We use Red Paddle Co boards, a brand committed to responsible manufacturing, and Gecko eco surf wax — made from natural, biodegradable ingredients.
6. Join local clean-up initiatives
BlueXperiences participates in regular beach and ocean clean-ups. We invite all our guests to join us.
7. Support certified operators
Choose tour operators who hold sustainability certifications. BlueXperiences holds the Sustainability Engaged certification from Turismo de Portugal.
At BlueXperiences, sustainability isn't just a buzzword — it's at the core of everything we do. From the equipment we choose to the routes we paddle, every decision is made with the health of the ocean in mind.
By choosing us for your SUP experience, you're not just having a great adventure — you're actively contributing to the preservation of one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines.
