Best Time to Visit the Benagil Cave (Months, Hours and What to Avoid)

The cave changes completely between morning and midday. The months and hours that actually work, and the four things that ruin a visit.

Everyone asks what the Benagil Cave is. Fewer people ask the question that actually decides whether the visit is memorable or frustrating: when to go.

Why timing matters more here than almost anywhere

The cave is a dome with a hole in the roof. Everything about the experience depends on what comes through that hole: direct sunlight turns the sand gold and the water turquoise, an overcast morning turns it grey. Add the tide, the swell and the number of people inside, and you have a place that changes completely within a few hours.

The best months

May, June, September and October are the sweet spot. The water is warm enough, the coast is not yet (or no longer) at capacity, and the sea is usually manageable.

  • July and August are the busiest. The light is magnificent but you will share the cave, and midday heat on the water is real.
  • November to April is quiet and often beautiful, but the swell is more unpredictable and some days simply do not allow a cave visit.

The best time of day

Early morning, without much doubt. Three reasons:

  1. 1Light — the sun comes in at an angle early on and lights the interior of the cave rather than blowing it out.
  2. 2Crowds — the tour boats arrive later. Before them, you may have the cave almost to yourself.
  3. 3Sea — the wind that builds along the south coast in the afternoon has not started yet, and the water inside the cave is calmer.

Midday in summer is the worst combination: harshest light, most people, strongest wind.

What actually ruins a visit

  • Wind — offshore wind looks calm from the beach and is hard work once you are out
  • Swell — small swell is fine, but inside the cave it reflects and builds
  • Tide — changes how much beach there is inside and where you can land
  • Crowds — a cave full of kayaks is not the experience in the photographs

None of these are visible from the car park. This is the honest reason to go with a guide who checks all four before deciding the time and the route.

How to plan around it

Book early in the day, be flexible about the exact date, and expect the operator to move you if the sea says no. A tour that gets rescheduled is a tour that was going to be uncomfortable.

If you want the background first — what the cave is, how it formed, why it is only reachable by sea — read what the Benagil Cave is and why it is so famous. Then choose how you want to reach it: the kayak tour or the SUP tour to the caves.
