KayakKayak in the Algarve: Where to Go, When to Go and What to Expect

The cave changes completely between morning and midday. The months and hours that actually work, and the four things that ruin a visit.
Everyone asks what the Benagil Cave is. Fewer people ask the question that actually decides whether the visit is memorable or frustrating: when to go.
The cave is a dome with a hole in the roof. Everything about the experience depends on what comes through that hole: direct sunlight turns the sand gold and the water turquoise, an overcast morning turns it grey. Add the tide, the swell and the number of people inside, and you have a place that changes completely within a few hours.
May, June, September and October are the sweet spot. The water is warm enough, the coast is not yet (or no longer) at capacity, and the sea is usually manageable.
Early morning, without much doubt. Three reasons:
Midday in summer is the worst combination: harshest light, most people, strongest wind.
None of these are visible from the car park. This is the honest reason to go with a guide who checks all four before deciding the time and the route.
Book early in the day, be flexible about the exact date, and expect the operator to move you if the sea says no. A tour that gets rescheduled is a tour that was going to be uncomfortable.
If you want the background first — what the cave is, how it formed, why it is only reachable by sea — read what the Benagil Cave is and why it is so famous. Then choose how you want to reach it: the kayak tour or the SUP tour to the caves.
