Benagil Caves Kayak Experience

What you see along the way

The route follows the coastline from Benagil beach, hugging the golden limestone cliffs that make this stretch of the Algarve unlike anywhere else. A few minutes of paddling brings you to the most photographed cave in Portugal: Algar de Benagil, a dome with an opening in the roof that lets daylight fall onto the small beach inside.

That opening is what makes Benagil unique — and it is also why the only way in is by sea. A kayak fits through the arch where larger boats cannot, and that is what lets you reach the smaller caves, see the rock formations up close and stop where a boat cannot.

How the tour runs

We meet at Benagil beach, 30 minutes before departure. Your guide gives a short briefing: paddling technique, what we are about to see, and the safety rules inside the caves. Then you get on the water and follow.

It is around 1h30 at sea, with stops. Your guide explains the geology — including fossils millions of years old trapped in the rock — and points out where the light and water make the best photographs. GoPro photos and video are included and sent to you afterwards.

No experience needed

The kayaks are stable and the guide stays close throughout. The minimum age is 4: children ride with an adult in a double kayak. You do not need to be a strong swimmer or to have paddled before — most people on the tour are first-timers.

What to bring

• Swimwear on under your clothes
• Sunscreen and water
• A towel and dry clothes for afterwards
• A dry bag for your phone (we also provide one)
• Footwear that can get wet — the rocks and sand are slippery

Safety and sea conditions

The caves can only be visited in calm seas. Your guide checks conditions before departure; if they are not right, the route is adjusted or the tour is rescheduled. It is uncommon, but it happens — which is why booking ahead and speaking to the team on the day beats turning up unannounced.

Access to the cave

Under the maritime authority's regulations, stepping onto the sand inside Benagil Cave is no longer allowed. Your guide makes sure you get the best views and photographs of the interior from the kayak, within the current safety rules.

When to go

Early morning means fewer people inside the caves, better light for photographs and usually calmer water. In July and August dates sell out days in advance; outside high season there is more choice of times and the guide can give each person more attention.
