Live one of the most unique and memorable experiences in the Algarve: explore the iconic Benagil Caves on a stand-up paddleboard. Guided by certified local instructors, this 1h30 tour takes you through the turquoise waters of the most photogenic cliffs on the Algarve coast.
The Benagil Caves are one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Portugal, and seeing them from a SUP board is a completely different perspective. The experience includes free GoPro photos and videos, so you can keep this moment forever.
No prior experience required — the guide teaches you the paddling technique before entering the water. Meeting point at Benagil Beach, 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
What changes when you stand up
From a paddleboard you look into the caves from above the waterline — the dome of the Algar de Benagil, the sand below, the colours in the rock. In a kayak you sit at water level; standing changes the view entirely.
A board also glides in quietly, which matters inside a cave where sound carries. It is the calmest way to reach Benagil.
How it runs
The briefing happens on the beach and always starts on your knees: first the stroke and steering, then stand up when you feel ready. There is no rush — some people stay seated the whole way, others are standing within two minutes.
Your guide leads and keeps the group together, with stops to explain the geology and to take photographs. GoPro photos and video are included.
Level, age and wind
No experience is needed, but paddleboarding asks more balance than kayaking. The minimum age is 6, sharing a board with an adult; from 12, you paddle your own board. Wind is what changes the day most: in strong wind the board becomes hard work and the guide adjusts the route or reschedules — which is why morning departures are the safest bet.
What to bring
- Clothes that can get wet (swimwear and a rash vest)
- Water-resistant sunscreen
- Water — the sun on the water dehydrates you without noticing
- Nothing valuable in your pockets: whatever you bring goes in the dry bag
- Sunglasses with a strap, if you wear them
Safety
Life jacket is mandatory, with a certified instructor and insurance included. Groups are deliberately small: inside a cave, fewer people means more safety and more of the guide's attention on each person.
Access to the cave
Under the maritime authority's regulations, stepping onto the sand inside Benagil Cave is no longer allowed. Your guide makes sure you get the best views and photographs of the interior from the board, within the current safety rules.
SUP or kayak?
With small children, kayaking is the right call — it is more stable and they ride with an adult. If you want the best view and do not mind working on your balance, SUP gives you the inside of the caves from above.

Requirements and restrictions
- Children under 11 must share a board with one adult
- A basic level of fitness is required, and you should be comfortable in the water
- For safety reasons, pregnant women cannot take part
- Because of the physical nature of the activity and the possibility of sudden movements or rockslides, it is not recommended for people with chronic back or neck problems, or who have had surgery in the last 6 months
