Paddleboarding on this coast
The Algarve's south coast faces Spain rather than the open Atlantic, which is why the water stays flat while the west coast closes out. For paddleboarding that is the whole game: you can stand up, look around and enjoy it instead of fighting the swell.
The stretch between Benagil and Praia da Marinha concentrates the most sea caves per kilometre in Portugal — nine of them on a good day, plus beaches you cannot reach on foot.
Which experience to choose
- Benagil Caves (1h30, ages 6–80) — the classic. Into the cave, under the opening in the roof, then the neighbouring coves.
- Sunrise (1h30, ages 4–80) — the calmest water of the day and the caves before anyone else arrives.
- Sunset (1h30, ages 4–80) — the same coast at the end of the day, with the light going gold over the bay.
First time on a board
You do not need experience. Every tour starts with a briefing on the beach: how to stand, how to hold the paddle, how to turn. Most people are paddling without thinking about it within fifteen minutes.
The board is wider than it looks and the first part is in shallow water. If you fall, you fall into the sea — that is the worst that happens.
Who can join
The minimum age is 6 on the Benagil tour and 4 on the sunrise and sunset tours. Children under 11 share a board with an adult.
For safety reasons, pregnant women cannot participate, and the tour is not recommended for chronic back or neck issues or recent surgery. Everyone wears a life jacket, which is included.
When to go
Mornings are calmer. The Algarve has a thermal breeze that builds after midday, so the first departures of the day get the flat water.
May, June, September and October are the best months: warm water, fewer people and better light. August works, but book the earliest slot. Outside summer the coast is quieter and the water is still around 18°C.
What to bring
- Swimwear already on, a towel and a change of clothes
- Water and reef-safe sunscreen — there is no shade on the beach or in the caves
- Shoes you do not mind getting wet
- A dry bag is provided for phone and keys
What is included
Every tour includes the board, paddle, life jacket, a certified local guide, insurance and GoPro photos of the session, sent the same day. Wetsuits are available to rent on cooler days.
If the sea is not safe, the tour is rescheduled at no cost or refunded in full.
