The Benagil Cave — locally known as Algar de Benagil — is a remarkable sea-cave carved into the golden limestone cliffs of the Algarve coastline. What makes it truly extraordinary is its natural "skylight": a large circular hole in the cave's domed ceiling that floods the interior with light, illuminating a small sandy beach below.

This combination of golden sand, turquoise water, dramatic rock formations, and natural light has made it one of the most photographed natural sites in Portugal, and indeed one of the most iconic sea-caves in the world.

Why is Benagil Cave Only Accessible by Sea?

The cave's only entrance is a sea arch at the base of the cliff — too small for most boats, but perfectly sized for kayaks and paddleboards. This is what makes it so exclusive and so special: you can only experience it properly by paddling in under your own power, or by swimming (though this is not recommended for safety reasons).
