29 October 2026

Short answer

Benagil is 12–15 minutes from Carvoeiro, 20–25 from Portimão, 25–30 from Albufeira, 40–45 from Lagos and 45–50 from Faro. In summer the car parks fill early, so arrive 45 minutes before your booking. Tours do not include transport.

How to get to the Benagil Cave from Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Portimão, Lagos and Faro — real driving times, parking, and which tour to book from each town.

Every day we get the same question: "I’m in Albufeira — can I get to Benagil?". The answer is yes — but travel time changes a lot from town to town, and at certain times of day getting there by car is only half the problem. This guide gives you the real distances, what to book and what to avoid.

Where Benagil is

The Benagil cave sits in the parish of Lagoa, between Benagil Beach and Praia da Marinha. There is no access by land: you get to Benagil beach and swim in, or you look at it from the top of the cliffs.

There are two things to decide before you leave the hotel: how to get to the beach and what time. The second matters more than it sounds.

Distances and times

FromDistanceBy carNote
Carvoeiro~7 km12–15 minThe closest; you can go and come back in a morning
Armação de Pêra~6 km10–12 minWhere our school is
Portimão~15 km20–25 minDirect road along the N125
Albufeira~20 km25–30 minThe most common starting point
Lagos~35 km40–45 minWorth combining with Ponta da Piedade on another day
Faro~55 km45–50 minPossible on your arrival or departure day

Times under normal conditions. In August, add 15 minutes between 10 am and 5 pm.

The problem isn’t the distance, it’s the parking

Benagil has two car parks, both about 300 metres from the beach, and both fill up early in summer.

The rule of thumb: from June to September, arrive at the car park 45 minutes before your booking time. Out of season, 20 minutes is enough.

If the car park is full, you have two options: wait for someone to leave, or park on the access road and walk down — it’s 10 to 15 minutes down, and as long again back up. With small children, count on double.

The three ways to see the cave

Kayak. The most complete way: you go into the cave, pass under the opening in the ceiling and carry on to the neighbouring coves. 1h30 on the water, minimum age 4. It’s what we recommend for anyone coming from Albufeira or Portimão — the trip is worth it.

SUP board. Slower, standing up, higher view. Minimum age 12. Best for people who have paddled before.

Boat. The only option for anyone who can’t paddle. It leaves from several marinas (Albufeira, Portimão, Vilamoura) and passes Benagil without going into the water. It isn’t the same experience — but it works for people with reduced mobility.

None of our tours include transport. The meeting point is at Benagil Beach, next to the Benagil Beach Bar.

If you’re in Albufeira

It’s the most common trip and the one that causes the most headaches in August.

What works: booking the first slot of the morning (9:00–9:30 am), leaving Albufeira at 8:00 am, parking without any trouble and being on the water before 10 am. By the time the coaches arrive, you’re already on your way out.

What doesn’t work: turning up at 11 am in August without a booking. The car park is full, the beach is full, and the first free slot may only be the next day.

If you’re in Carvoeiro

It’s the best base for Benagil: 15 minutes and you never need the motorway.

You can do the Seven Hanging Valleys trail (which passes above the cave) and a kayak tour in the same morning. If you do both, start with the kayak — the sea is calmer early on.

If you’re in Lagos or Faro

It’s possible, but it’s a full-day trip. From Lagos, leave with some margin: 45 minutes by car, plus 30 minutes of buffer, plus 1h30 on the water. That’s about five hours door to door.

From Faro, the same reasoning — and it’s worth combining with Praia da Marinha, which is 10 minutes from Benagil and justifies the trip on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bus from Albufeira to Benagil? There are buses that pass through Lagoa, but they don’t stop at the beach. If you don’t have a car, the practical option is a transfer or a taxi — and in that case, book the tour for a fixed time.

How long does it take from Albufeira to Benagil? About 25 to 30 minutes by car, with no traffic. In August, count on 40.

Do I need a car? It helps a lot. Without a car, Benagil is complicated — there’s no decent public transport to the beach.

Can I walk from Benagil to Praia da Marinha? You can, along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. It’s about 6 km, 2h30 to 3h, with cliffs and no shade.

Do the tours include transport from the hotel? No. The meeting point is at Benagil Beach. The only service with a transfer included is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.
