Short answer
Armação de Pêra is a fishing town in the centre of the Algarve with one of the longest, calmest beaches in the region. It is 10 minutes from Praia da Marinha and 15 from the Benagil Cave, which makes it the most practical base for exploring this stretch of coast.
A local's guide to Armação de Pêra: what to do in the Algarve's calmest bay, with the best beaches, the Benagil caves, when to visit and where to eat.
Armação de Pêra is the village where our school is based — and most people who visit the Algarve pass it by. This guide explains what there is to see and do, where the best beaches are, when to come and why it is the most practical base for exploring the coast between Albufeira and Carvoeiro.
Armação de Pêra is a coastal village in the municipality of Silves, in the central Algarve. It sits halfway between Albufeira (to the west) and Carvoeiro (to the east), about 40 minutes from Faro airport along the A22.
The name comes from the old trade: this was where the nets were gathered in and the fish prepared — a fishing armação. The village grew with tourism, but the fishing harbour at the western end of the beach is still working, and that is what stops Armação from looking like just another resort.
Praia de Armação de Pêra is one of the largest in the Algarve: several kilometres of continuous sand, with no cliffs, no steps and no uneven ground.
The bay is wide and sheltered, and the water stays flat when the rest of the coast is choppy. That is why it is one of the most popular beaches for families with small children — no waves, no current, no frights.
At the western end, the fishing boats are unloaded in the early morning. At the eastern end, the beach widens and the quietest stretches of sand are found there.
Get in the water. The bay is the best place in the central Algarve to learn to surf and the only one where I have found flat water in the middle of August. Our surf lessons and paddle sessions take place here.
Walk at the end of the day. The sun sets over the sea, on the right-hand side of the bay, and the village is not tall enough to hide it. You do not need a plan: walk to the beach and wait.
Go to the caves. Benagil is 15 minutes away by car; Praia da Marinha 10. This is why Armação makes a good base: it sits next to the two most photographed beaches in the country without Carvoeiro's prices.
See the old village. The narrow streets behind the church keep the layout from when this was nothing but a fishing armação.
| Place | Distance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Praia da Marinha | ~10 min | The most photographed cliffs in the Algarve |
| Benagil Cave | ~15 min | The cave with the opening in its roof |
| Carvoeiro and Algar Seco | ~15 min | The village on the cliffs and the hollowed-out rocks |
| Nossa Senhora da Rocha, Porches | ~10 min | A chapel on top of a cliff, open views |
| Silves | ~25 min | The castle and the old town |
| Albufeira | ~20 min | Nightlife and town beaches |
What people eat here is fish and shellfish: grilled fish, cataplana, seafood rice, and the wine of the region (Lagoa, Lagoa and Portimão). Along the beach avenue there is everything from a snack bar to a fish restaurant — and, outside August, almost everything can be booked on the day.
An honest note: the restaurants facing the beachfront charge for the view. Two streets back, you eat better and for less.
June, July and September are the best months: warm water, long days, a busy beach but without August's chaos.
August is the absolute peak. The beach fills up, parking runs out and prices go up. If you come in August, arrive early.
October and November are the season nobody talks about: water at 20°C, golden light, empty beaches. It is my favourite month for working in the water.
Winter is quiet and the village belongs to the people who live here. Many restaurants close, but the ones that open are the best.
The flat bay solves half the problems. The other half is logistics: parking next to the beach, boardwalks down to the sand, and the surf school two minutes from the sand.
Nothing here has a cliff or a staircase — which, with prams and small children, makes all the difference.
Our school — Blue Xperiences SUP & Surf School — is on Avenida do Rio e Riamar C, in Armação de Pêra. This is where the surf lessons and the paddle sessions start from; the trips to the Benagil caves leave from Praia de Benagil, 15 minutes away.
Armação de Pêra or Carvoeiro? Armação has the flat beach and more space; Carvoeiro has the cliffs and more restaurants. For families, Armação. For couples who want views, Carvoeiro.
Can you walk to Benagil? No. It is about 15 minutes by car, or a long walk along the coast (the Seven Hanging Valleys trail passes above the cave).
Does the beach have waves? Rarely. The bay is sheltered and the water stays flat — that is what makes it good for learning.
When is the water warmest? Between July and October, peaking in August and September.
Do you need a car? It helps. There are buses, but the beaches around (Marinha, Benagil) are best visited by car.
