Kayak or Boat in Benagil: Which Should You Choose?

20 June 2024

Short answer

Kayak is the best way to see the Benagil Cave: you enter at water level, pass under the opening in the roof and continue to the neighbouring caves in the same trip. Paddleboard gives a higher view; a boat is the only option for anyone who cannot paddle.

Benagil is the most photographed cave in Portugal, and there are now several ways to see it: kayak, paddleboard, or boat. They are not equivalent. This page compares them honestly, so you choose the one that fits you.

Three ways in

Kayak. Two people per boat, stable, fast enough to reach the further caves. Minimum age 4.

Paddleboard (SUP). One person per board, slower, higher view. More physical, more rewarding on a calm day. Minimum age 12.

Boat. The only option if you cannot paddle, and the briefest visit — you see the cave from the entrance, usually without entering the water.

What you actually see

All three reach the same cave. What changes is how close you are to the water, how long you stay, and how much of the coastline you cover on the way.

From a kayak you enter the cave at water level, pass under the opening in the ceiling, and can paddle on to the neighbouring coves in the same trip. It is the most complete version.

From a paddleboard you stand, which gives a better view into the cave and over the water — and a much stronger sense of having earned it.

From a boat you see the cave from the outside, at speed, with a group of thirty or more. It is efficient and it is not immersive.

Time and effort

Time on the waterEffort
Kayak1h30Low to moderate
SUP1h30Moderate
Boat30 to 60 minNone

If you have limited time and limited mobility, the boat is the pragmatic choice. If you have a morning and want to remember it, paddle.

Who each suits

Kayak — families with children from 4, first-timers, couples, anyone who wants to cover distance without effort.

SUP — confident swimmers, teenagers and adults, people who have paddled before, and anyone who wants the photograph from the water.

Boat — older visitors, people with reduced mobility, and anyone who simply wants to see the cave without getting wet.

Cost: what to expect

Prices vary by operator, by season and by group size, and they are always shown on the booking page before you confirm. As a rule, boat trips are the cheapest per person and private tours the most expensive. What you are paying for is time in the water, group size and how close you get.

Be careful with unusually cheap tours: they usually mean a larger group, less time in the cave, or an operator without the required registration. We list our registration on every page (RNAAT-607/2016).

Our recommendation

If it is your first time in Benagil and you are reasonably comfortable in the water: kayak in the early morning. Calm water, low light, fewer people, and 1h30 on the water rather than a drive-by.

If you already paddle and want the best photograph of your trip: SUP.

If you are travelling with someone who cannot paddle: boat, and enjoy it for what it is.

What is included on our tours

Kayak and SUP tours include the equipment, life jacket (mandatory), certified local guide, insurance, dry bag and GoPro photos. Minimum ages are 4 (kayak) and 12 (SUP). If the sea is not safe, we reschedule at no cost or refund in full.

When a private tour makes sense

Private tours cost more per person but change the experience: your group only, your pace, and a guide who can adapt the route to what you actually want to see. It makes sense for families with young children, for photographers, and for anyone who would rather not share a cave with strangers.

For couples and small groups, the shared tour is usually the better value — same coast, same guide, lower price.

What to ask before booking

Is the operator registered? RNAAT number, visible on the site.

What is the maximum group size? It tells you more about the experience than any description.

How long on the water? Not the total duration — the time actually paddling.

What happens if the sea is bad? Reschedule, refund, or neither.

Are photos included? On our tours they are, and they arrive the same day.

The short version

If you can paddle: kayak, early, 1h30. If you want the photograph: SUP. If you cannot paddle: boat, and enjoy the coastline without pretending it is the same thing.

Whichever you choose, book with an operator that lists its registration, keeps groups small and tells you what happens when the sea is bad. Those three details say more than any brochure.

One last thing about photographs

Every tour on this coast produces photographs — the cave does most of the work. What differs is whether they are included. On our tours the guide carries a GoPro and sends the photos the same day, which means you spend the tour looking at the cave instead of at a screen.
